Family Service of Greater Boston (FSGB) promotes self-sufficiency and well-being for at-risk urban children, youth and families by providing innovative, culturally competent, and integrated health and social services intended to contribute to healthy communities. Family Service fulfills this mission through sustained commitment to programmatic excellence in the areas of family formation, family wellness and family coping skills. They will be celebrating 175 years of service with a gala on Thursday, October 14th from 7-10pm at Cyclorama at the Boston Center for the Arts.

Cambridge Housing Assistance Fund

The Cambridge Housing Assistance Fund (CHAF) is committed to preserving the diversity and character of the city of Cambridge by providing an economical bridge to housing for homeless and near homeless families and individuals. Funds donated to CHAF assist those in need with the startup costs of rental housing. CHAF believes that people thrive best in a home, and that children shouldn’t be raised in a shelter. The CHAF Home Sweet Home Dessert Tasting, takes place on Saturday, October 16 from 7-11pm at the Cambridge Hyatt Regency Hotel.

Aroa Fine Chocolate – Thanks and We’ll Miss You

And the phone call came in – “David we are no longer in business” said friend and Executive Pastry Chef Tim Brown. I am still sad over a month later not just for Tim who gave that business everything but as new as our business is, Aroa played a major part in where and why I started Boston Chocolate Tours.

Aroa for those of you not lucky enough to have enjoyed some of their fine Venezuelan chocolate was in the South End, on Washington Street, not far from Flour Bakery. It was a European style café where we started our South End Chocolate tour in front of the 16 framed photographs showing every step of the chocolate process, from pod harvesting to shipping preparations. It had an open kitchen that would allow guests to see and smell the chocolate as it would go through the enrobing and be stirred in the tempering machines. And oh yeah, the chocolate was amazing, El Ray owned it but Tim Brown’s passion brought it to life.

The South End Boston Chocolate tour is a great tour with more chocolate than we can include in one tour but Aroa was special and I will always be thankful for the welcoming that the Boston Chocolate Tour guests and for helping us start the tours and our company on the right note.

Lori’s Breast Friends

Lori’s Breast Friends is a team of individuals bound together for a common cause: finding a cure for breast cancer. This will be their fifth year participating in the Boston Breast Cancer 3-Day, a 60-mile walk around the greater Boston area benefiting Susan G. Komen for the Cure. As a team, they put together various events including the Lori’s Breast Friends annual Golf Tournament and their kick-off fundraiser, Think Pink!, a night featuring food, raffles and dancing in memory of their friend Lori and in celebration of finding a cure.

The Jimmy Fund

Since its founding in 1948, the Jimmy Fund has supported the fight against cancer in children and adults at Boston’s Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, helping to raise the chances of survival for cancer patients around the world. The Jimmy Fund Golf Program is one of the oldest and largest charity golf programs in the country, having collectively raised millions of dollars in support of cancer research and care at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute.

The Jimmy Fund Council of Greater Boston’s annual golf tournament is on June 21st at Blackrock Country Club in Hingham, MA.

Manitou Experience

The mission of Manitou Experience is to provide boys who have experienced a significant death-loss with a one-week summer camp program that helps build confidence, encourage laughter and navigate their grief through friendship, teamwork, athletics, and the common bond of loss.

Beginning this fall, Manitou Experience will expand to year-round programming to support the continuing needs of our campers, their families and the community. Join them for cocktails, hors d’oeuvres and silent auction to support this new program on June 26, 2010 at Temple Shir Tikva, 141 Boston Post Road, Wayland, MA.
